This Privacy Policy applies to the use of the Don Streamo application ("App") for iOS and tvOS, as well as our website donstreamo.com and any related subdomains (collectively, the "Service"). It explains what personal data we collect, why, how we use and store it, with whom we share it, and what rights you have with respect to your data.
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, please contact us at any time using the details provided in Section II below.
We, Don Streamo (Inh. Andreas Krause, Zechenstr. 5, 51103 Cologne, Germany; hereinafter referred to as "Don Streamo", "we", "us", or "our"), take the protection of your personal data very seriously and strictly comply with applicable data protection laws, in particular the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Don Streamo is a media player. You add your own sources, the App scans them for video files, enriches them with metadata from the internet, and plays them back on your device. The App is completely free: there are no user accounts, no sign-up, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, and no advertising. As a result, we process very little personal data, as described below.
In accordance with the GDPR, you have various rights with respect to your personal data, including — under certain conditions — the right to object to particular types of data processing. Where such a right to object exists, it is clearly indicated in the relevant section of this Privacy Policy.
The controller responsible for data processing within the meaning of the GDPR is:

1. Visiting our Website (donstreamo.com)
When you visit donstreamo.com, our web server automatically collects and stores information in server log files that your browser transmits. This includes:
This data is not combined with other data sources and is used solely to ensure the technical operation, security, and stability of our website. No conclusions about your identity can be drawn from this data, and we make no attempt to draw any. Log data is stored for a maximum of 7 days and then automatically deleted or anonymized.
The legal basis for this processing is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest lies in ensuring the proper, stable, and secure operation of our website. Our website is hosted on servers operated by Strato AG, Pascalstraße 10, 10587 Berlin, Germany, which acts as a data processor on our behalf pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR. All servers are located in Germany.
⚠ Right to object: Where processing is based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, you have the right to object at any time on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21 GDPR).
2. Contact Form
If you contact us through the contact form on donstreamo.com, the personal data you provide — your name, your email address, the selected topic, and the content of your message — will be used solely to handle your enquiry. The data is transmitted to us by email via our email provider (Strato AG, Germany) to our support mailbox, and a confirmation copy is sent to the email address you entered. The message is not stored in a separate database; it remains in our email inbox for as long as necessary to process your request, after which it is deleted unless statutory retention obligations apply.
The contact form is protected against spam by a self-built challenge ("captcha") that is hosted entirely on our own servers. It processes only the interaction needed to distinguish a human from an automated script and sets no cookies; no data is shared with any third-party captcha provider.
The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in properly handling your enquiry) and, where applicable, Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (your consent, given by submitting the form). You may withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future by contacting us at the details in Section II.
3. Use of the Don Streamo App
Don Streamo is a local-first application: most of what you do happens entirely on your device. Only the limited data described below reaches our servers. Our backend (anonymous analytics and a version check) is operated by Strato AG, Pascalstraße 10, 10587 Berlin, Germany, acting as a data processor pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR. All servers are located in Germany.
3.1 Anonymous Usage Analytics (Device Identifier)
When you first open the App, a random 25-character identifier is generated on your device and stored locally. It is derived from a timestamp and random characters and contains no personally identifiable information by itself. With anonymous analytics requests, the App transmits this identifier together with your platform (e.g. iOS or tvOS), the App version, your device language, and product events (for example: the App was opened, a source was added, a scan finished, or playback started) plus a non-personal context detail (for example the playback engine used, or the type of source added).
These requests are signed with HMAC-SHA256 and sent on a fire-and-forget basis. We use this data solely to count active installations and to understand which features are used, so that we can operate and improve the App. We do not link this identifier to your identity and make no attempt to do so. The analytics records are stored on our servers (Strato AG, Germany). A separate version check is performed without any identifier and only tells the App whether the current version is still supported.
The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — our legitimate interest in operating, securing, and improving the App. We declare this collection in our App's Privacy Manifest (PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy), where NSPrivacyTracking is set to false; the data is categorized as "App Functionality" and "Analytics" and is not used for tracking.
⚠ Right to object: Where processing is based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, you have the right to object at any time on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21 GDPR). Deleting the App removes the local identifier and stops any further analytics.
3.2 Your Sources, Credentials, and Media Stay on Your Device
You add your own sources to Don Streamo — local files, network shares (e.g. SMB, NFS, FTP, SFTP, WebDAV), media servers, or cloud storage. The App connects to these sources directly from your device. The access details you enter (server addresses, usernames, passwords or tokens) are stored locally on your device (in the iOS/tvOS Keychain) and are not transmitted to, or stored on, our servers. Your file names, library contents, playback positions, and the media files themselves remain on your device and on your own sources. We have no access to them.
Because this processing takes place locally on your device and via your own sources, it does not constitute a processing of personal data by us.
3.3 Metadata Enrichment via TMDB
To display posters, cast, plot summaries, and ratings, the App sends search queries derived from your file names (for example a title and year parsed from the filename) to The Movie Database (TMDB), a service operated by TMDB (themoviedb.org) in the United States, and receives metadata in return. This means filename-derived text is transmitted to TMDB, which processes it under its own privacy policy (themoviedb.org/privacy-policy). This constitutes a transfer to a third country (USA).
We use this solely to provide the metadata enrichment feature. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — our legitimate interest in providing a meaningful, well-organized media library. Don Streamo uses TMDB and the TMDB APIs but is not endorsed, certified, or otherwise approved by TMDB.
3.4 What We Do Not Collect
Don Streamo has no user accounts and never asks for your name, email address, or any login to use the App. We do not collect financial data, we do not host or receive your media files, and we offer no file uploads, account sharing, in-app purchases, or advertising. We use no advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs, and we never sell or share your data with data brokers.
3.5 App Store Distribution (Apple)
The App is distributed via the Apple App Store. Apple Inc. may process certain technical data in connection with the download and use of the App under Apple's own privacy policy, which we do not control. Please refer to the Apple Privacy Policy.
The Don Streamo App does not use cookies. As a native application, it communicates with our servers through HTTPS API calls with request signing (HMAC-SHA256) and does not rely on any cookie-based mechanisms.
Our website donstreamo.com does not use cookies for analytics, marketing, or advertising purposes. The contact form's spam protection is self-hosted and sets no cookies. Standard server log files may be maintained for security and operational purposes as described in Section III.1. If we introduce cookies in the future, this Privacy Policy will be updated accordingly.
1. Overview
In addition to the right to withdraw any consent you have given us, you are entitled — subject to the applicable legal requirements — to the following rights under the GDPR:
Please note that because the App's analytics identifier is anonymous and stored only on your device until it is transmitted, your sources and media never reach us, and the App requires no account, we in practice hold very little data that can be linked to you. Deleting the App removes the local identifier and stops any further analytics. To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at support@donstreamo.com. We will respond within the statutory period (generally one month).
California Users (CCPA): We do not sell your personal information. You have the right to know what personal information we collect and the right to delete it (by contacting us).
2. Right to Object
Under the conditions of Art. 21(1) GDPR, you may object to data processing based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest) on grounds relating to your particular situation. We are then obligated to cease that processing unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds which override your interests, or the processing is necessary for the establishment, exercise, or defense of legal claims. The right to object applies in particular to the processing described in Sections III.1, III.2, and III.3.1 of this Privacy Policy.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to any third party. We do not share your data with advertising networks, analytics providers, or data brokers. We only disclose data to the extent described below:
1. Data Processors (Art. 28 GDPR)
2. The Movie Database (TMDB), USA
As described in Section III.3.3, the App sends filename-derived search queries to TMDB to retrieve metadata. TMDB processes this data in the United States under its own privacy policy. This is a transfer to a third country and occurs where applicable subject to appropriate safeguards under the GDPR.
3. Apple Inc., USA (App Store Distribution)
Our App is distributed via the Apple App Store. Apple may process certain technical data in connection with the download and use of the App under its own privacy policy. We do not control this processing.
4. Legal Obligations
We may disclose personal data if required by law, court order, or official governmental authority, or if necessary to protect our rights or the rights and safety of our users.
5. Transfers to Third Countries
Your data is primarily processed in Germany by Strato AG. Transfers to the United States occur only in connection with TMDB (metadata enrichment) and Apple (App Store distribution), each under their own privacy policies and, where applicable, subject to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or Standard Contractual Clauses (Art. 46 GDPR).
We take appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data against loss, theft, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. In particular: all data transmission between the App and our servers uses HTTPS (TLS encryption); analytics requests are signed with HMAC-SHA256; access to our systems is restricted to authorized systems; and our web server and analytics database are hosted in Germany by Strato AG, in accordance with German and EU data protection standards. Despite these measures, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure.
Don Streamo is not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16; the App's analytics is anonymous and requires no account. If you believe a child has provided personal information in connection with the Service, please contact us at support@donstreamo.com so we can address it promptly.
